Are you part of any clubs or associations: I am the Finance Director of the MBA Association.
What made you pursue an MBA: I pursued an MBA for the opportunity to pivot my career. I was working within the telecommunications industry and wanted a change. With that I pursued the long-time goal of mine to complete the MBA as I had beliefs it will help build leadership and soft skill credentials.
Why did you choose DeGroote: I chose the DeGroote MBA program because a family member completed his MBA here years ago and had great things to say about the program.
What has been your favourite part about the MBA: Thus far the development of my network and the personal growth that has occurred are my favorite parts of the MBA. I have had the opportunity to meet very high-level C-suite business leaders, which I would never had the opportunity to do without the MBA, and have worked extremely hard on all of the course work and GRIT week challenges. With that experience I can say that my capacity to work has been expanded and I can take on more complex problems and work through them in a way I haven’t had to before. Additionally, many late nights and great conversations with my peers, have helped build my character.
What is one quick tip you have for a first-year MBA student: Put 100% of yourself into the program and work harder than you have ever before. What you put into the program is what you will get out of it. Take on that stretch assignment and reach out to someone new almost daily.
What has been your favourite course at DeGroote, and why: My favorite course has been the Management Consulting course as part of the full-time program because it taught me the importance of primary and secondary research to both identifying and solving real business problems.
What I wish I knew on Day 1: I wish I knew to start networking and targeting specific industries or roles from day one. I was very fortunate that I ended up in a place I wanted but that was more of a connection with the right person at the right time as opposed to being very intentional. I think it is best to start networking and having meaningful conversations from day one and being prepared to consistently show up every single day while trying to be the best version of yourself.
What is one of your favourite weekend activities: Reading a book and having quiet time to think. Of course, seeing friends is fantastic and really necessary.
