What made you pursue an MBA: I decided to pursue an MBA because I wanted to bridge the gap between my background in science and my growing interest in business. During my undergraduate studies, I enjoyed the analytical and problem-solving aspects of science, but I found myself increasingly drawn to the strategic, collaborative, and decision-making side of business. Through internships and project experiences, I realized I wanted to build a stronger foundation in areas such as strategy, finance, and analytics so I could combine both skill sets in a meaningful way. Pursuing an MBA felt like the right opportunity to further develop the business side of my background while still leveraging the analytical thinking I gained from science.
Why did you choose DeGroote: I chose the DeGroote School of Business because of the strong focus on experiential learning, collaboration, and leadership development. Coming from a science and business background, I wanted a program that would help me further strengthen my business and analytical skills through real-world projects and industry experiences. I was also particularly drawn to the co-op aspect, as it provides valuable hands-on experience and the opportunity to apply classroom learning in professional settings. Additionally, the supportive and collaborative culture aligned closely with the type of environment I wanted to grow in both professionally and personally.
What has been your favourite part about the MBA: My favourite part of the MBA experience so far has been going on exchange, which I genuinely think was one of the best decisions I’ve made. It gave me the opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone, meet people from different backgrounds, and gain a more global perspective on business. I’ve also really valued the co-op aspect of the program, as it has opened doors to experiences that helped me further explore and strengthen my path in finance. Being able to apply what I’ve learned in real professional settings has made the experience much more meaningful and rewarding.
What is one quick tip you have for a first-year MBA student: One quick tip I would give to a first-year MBA student is to stay organized and be patient with yourself. Balancing co-op recruiting, schoolwork, networking, and extracurricular activities can feel overwhelming at times, especially in the beginning. However, things become much more manageable once you adjust to the pace of the program, and it definitely gets better in second year. Taking things one step at a time, managing your time well, and not comparing your journey to others can make a huge difference.
What has been your favourite course at DeGroote, and why: My favorite course has been Marketing because I really enjoyed the case analysis aspect of the course and breaking down real business situations to develop strategic recommendations. Even though my career path is more focused on finance and analytics, I still chose Marketing as my favourite because of how engaging and practical the course was. I also appreciated how the professor structured the course, as the discussions and assignments made the content very interactive and insightful. The course helped me think more critically and creatively about how businesses connect with consumers and position themselves in the market.
What I wish I knew on Day 1: What I wish I knew on Day 1 is that everyone moves at their own pace. Some people may start recruiting early, reading course material ahead of time, or seeming like they have everything figured out, but there’s no need to feel overwhelmed or compare yourself. Focus on your own growth, take opportunities as they come, and trust that you’ll find your path throughout the program.
