Reason for pursuing an MBA: What motivated me to pursue an MBA was the desire to explore the business side of healthcare after working as a nurse in the clinical field. My experience at the bedside gave me a deep understanding of patient care and the day-to-day realities faced by both patients and providers. Over time, I felt a growing urge to make a broader impact—not just at the individual level, but by influencing the systems and strategies behind care delivery. I was also eager to tap into my creative side—solving problems, improving processes, and thinking more innovatively. An MBA offered the perfect opportunity to build the business knowledge and leadership skills I needed to bridge the gap between clinical insight and strategic decision-making. I also saw it as a way to become a stronger advocate for frontline healthcare workers, ensuring that their voices and experiences are represented in high-level decisions that ultimately shape patient outcomes.
Why DeGroote was chosen: When I chose to embark on my MBA journey, DeGroote immediately caught my attention for several reasons. Firstly, its offering of three co-op opportunities throughout the program stood out to me. Having previously completed an undergraduate program with placement opportunities, I highly valued the chance to engage in co-op experiences as they would enable me to explore various career paths, companies, and industries. The prospect of three distinct co-op experiences excited me as it meant expanding my professional network in different settings. Additionally, the opportunity to complete a semester abroad was another major draw. As someone who values global perspectives and cross-cultural experiences, immersing myself in a different academic and cultural setting offered a unique opportunity for both personal development and professional insight. It challenged me to adapt, think differently, and gain a deeper appreciation for how business is approached around the world.
Favorite MBA experience: One of the highlights of my MBA journey so far has been the opportunity to study abroad. Living and learning in a different country exposed me to new perspectives, both culturally and academically. It pushed me to adapt quickly, think more globally, and build connections with people from around the world. Beyond the classroom, it was an incredible personal experience – one that strengthened my independence, resilience, and curiosity. It reminded me how valuable it is to step outside of familiar environments and embrace new ways of thinking, which I know will continue to shape how I approach challenges.
Tip for first-year students: Say yes to as many opportunities as you can; whether it’s case competitions, networking events, or club involvement. You never know what experience will lead to a new skill, connection, or even career path. This is your time to explore, grow, and push yourself beyond your comfort zone.
