Serena Sandhu
Education: Honours Bachelor’s of Science in Biology and Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour at McMaster University.
Co-op Experience: Admin Resident at Humber River Hospital; Marketing Intern at Abbott; Intern at Bridge Medical Communications.
Reason for pursuing an MBA: I wanted to build on my business knowledge and skills, and gain more experience through the co-ops.
Why DeGroote was chosen: I chose the DeGroote MBA program mostly for its co-op program. I think a co-op is a great way of gaining direct work experience while exploring up to three different roles you are interested in. I am also very interested in the Pharma and MedTech Industry and talked to previous students from DeGroote that had gone into the industry in roles I was interested in.
Favorite MBA experience: My favourite part of the MBA experience so far has been my exchange to Lille, France this past winter semester! I had the opportunity to take many different classes and learn from professors that flew in from different countries.
Tip for first-year students: Stay organized! The first semester especially can get very busy, especially as a co-op student as you will also be applying to your first co-op while balancing school. And it is also important to make sure you have time to sleep well, exercise or whatever activities you enjoy doing in your free time.
Industries of interest: Pharmaceutical and MedTech.
Club involvement: DIHLC, Motionball DeGroote.
Weekend activities: Spending time outdoors, spending time with family/friends, and trying new restaurants in the city.
Favorite course: Accounting for Decision Makers during the second semester – it changed my perspective on Accounting and Dr. Hu was a great professor!
Fun facts/hobbies: I love to travel and have visited over 20 countries. Most recently I just finished an exchange term in France.
Favorite book/movie/podcast: I recently finished reading Atomic Habits and really liked it!
